LED’s – or ‘Light Emitting Diodes’ lamps have revolutionised the lighting scene by giving high quality light with very little energy consumption.
It uses 75% less energy when compared to incandescent lamps to give the same light output, thus saving electricity expenses. It also generates less heat when compared to incandescent and CFL bulbs.
With regards to lifespan, LED lights last 35 to 50 times longer than incandescent lights and about 2 to 5 times longer than fluorescent lights with almost no degradation in the light output.
In a typical household in Australia, the average annual electricity bill is around $1200. Normally lighting costs account for 40% of electricity bill which comes to about $480 approx. By replacing the existing lights with LEDs we can get a saving of at least 50-60% on lighting costs.
Below is a sample lighting energy calculator for a 3-bedroom house. The energy calculator shows the energy savings you can achieve by using LED lamps.
